Is fashion jewelry profitable?
Updated

Fashion jewelry can produce a profit when the money received exceeds the full costs of selling it. A low purchase price or a large markup alone does not answer the question. Build the calculation around your actual selling channel, stock and costs rather than an unsupported market-size statistic.
Separate markup from money left per sale
Markup compares the selling price with the purchase cost. The amount left after variable costs also accounts for expenses that arise when a piece is sold. Keep freight, packing, payment or marketplace fees and any allowance for handling issues visible. Use one currency and one selling unit throughout the calculation.
A hypothetical example
Assume one item sells for $12, its allocated landed cost is $4, packing costs $1 and selling fees are $2 per completed sale. These are illustrative inputs, not Paradise prices or a forecast. The amount left toward fixed costs is $12 − $4 − $1 − $2 = $5 per sale.
If the period's fixed costs are assumed to be $250, the example needs 50 completed sales at that contribution to cover those fixed costs. The U.S. Small Business Administration's break-even model divides fixed costs by selling price minus variable cost per unit.

Test changes before increasing the order
Using the same simplified cost assumptions, reducing the selling price to $10 leaves $3 per sale and requires 84 sales to cover $250, rounding up to a whole item. Actual fees may change with price, so replace the fixed $2 assumption with your channel's real calculation. Include refunds, replacements and discounts according to how they occur in your business.
Keep unsold stock in the decision
The example assumes that the counted items sell. A large order still ties up cash in pieces that remain unsold. Track stock received, completed sales, returns and remaining units by style and color. Review the result for a defined period before ordering more. Do not treat interest on social media as completed sales.
Use a coherent range and honest descriptions
Start with a category you can present clearly, such as rhinestone earrings. Confirm product details and the selling unit so corrections do not become avoidable costs. See the resale-range workflow for linking sourcing decisions with retail stock records. No category label guarantees a profit; the outcome depends on the inputs and actual sales.
